I like salt.
I try not to use too much of it due to long term health reasons – high blood pressure, and water retention due to the havoc it plays on our kidneys in preventing it from removing water from our bodies.
As I put some salt on my salad tonight I thought “all I need is a pinch,” and with that I used my pointer finger and my thumb to grab just enough to sprinkle on it.
But, what if I put too much? Luckily it was a salad I could rinse it off because the dressing was not on it yet. However, if it were not a salad too much would change the taste of the food to bitterness. Too much could ruin an entire dish.
When just the right amount of salt is used the food takes on a whole new flavor. Salt can make a bland meal cause our taste buds to stand at attention. It can spark our stomachs to desire additional servings. And, ignite a passion to attempt to re-create a meal. Who knows we may even invite friends over to share in the meal?
Recently I was in a spice store and was amazed at the different types of salts: flavored, colored, smoked. Salts from the Himalayans, and the seas. Salts for desserts, meats, vegetables, and even for beverages. If you needed salt – they had one for any occasion.
What happened to good old Morton’s Salt? Plain table salt.
Tonight as I pondered over what used to be a simple seasoning for our foods is very diverse in itself. And isn’t that how we are – diverse?
Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth.” (Mt. 5:13a NLT) We – are the salt. We come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and areas on the globe. We speak different languages, have different cultures, and celebrate some different holidays. We live in a diverse world. A world that could use a pinch of salt.
- With just a pinch we are to tell what the LORD has done (for us). (Ps. 118:17b NLT)
- With just a pinch we are to have conversations that are gracious. (Col. 4:6 NLT)
- With just a pinch we are not to judge. (Luke 6:37)
- With just a pinch we are to show kindness. (Eph. 4:32)
- With just a pinch we are to encourage. (1 Th. 5:11)
Let us take our salt and sprinkle it all around us to those we come in contact with. May we reflect the savory taste of Christ to others, as He has given to us.
May our pinch of salt cause others to seek Him, and desire additional servings.
May our pinch of salt leave them better off than they were before.
May our pinch of salt cause others to re-create buy sprinkling just a pinch in their sphere of influence. For Jesus says: “YOU. Are the salt of the earth.” Mt. 5:13a
Who will you sprinkle some salt on?
