It’s The Great Valentine!
I’ve changed the words a bit said by the famous, Linus Van Pelt who originally said, “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!” from the comic “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” by Charles Schultz. If you are familiar with the cartoon, Linus is convinced there is a great pumpkin that comes at night, and he sits in the pumpkin patch all night waiting for him to come. And, if you know the story, The Great Pumpkin never comes.
But, on the contrary we do have a Great Valentine! There is no sitting in stores filled with the colors of red, and pink; while balloons, and flowers are front and center. The smell of chocolates fill the air, and all around are heart shaped boxes measuring the size of peoples love. People will not find The Great Valentine on dating sites, meet ups, or with a hook up. And, no Cupid is not The Great Valentine.
The Great Valentine is with us always, he does not come only on February 14th. The Great Valentine holds the perfect love for us, and fulfills love’s definition in 1 Corinthian’s 13 to a tee!
“Love is patient; love is kind. Love does not envy. It is not boastful; is not conceited; does not act improperly; is not selfish; is not provoked; does not keep a record of wrongs; finds no joy in unrighteousness; but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” 1 Cor. 13:4-8a HCSB.
I know – sounds too good to be true. Take a moment and reread the character of The Great Valentine. Now think back on your valentines past. Were they like that? Truth be told, your current valentines don’t hold true to that definition all the time. The Great Valentine is the epitome of love.
He is: patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 2 Pe. 3:9b
He is: the fruit of the Spirit…kindness. Gal. 5:22
He is: jealous for YOU. Dt. 4:23-24
He is: forgiving, and will never remember their sin no more. Jer. 31:34
He is: righteousness and faithfulness. Ps. 89:33
He is: the way, the truth, and the life. Jn. 14:6
If you find yourself sitting among the roses, chocolates, and cards. Or looking at the array of pictures profiling the selection of available dates remember there is a valentine that is waiting for you. All you have to do is face due north. Instead of Cupid’s arrow piercing your heart that may leave a hole, The Great Valentine says “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.” (Ez. 36:26a HCSB)
In the height of the season of love may your heart find the one that woos you and knows your name. For He says “he calls his sheep by name” Jn.10:3. There you will find The Great Valentine. The One no other can hold a candle to.
He is: The Great Valentine!
